The Al-Andalus to Maghreb Grand Route

Madrid

Arrive in Madrid, settle in, and prepare for the journey south. The capital serves as the gateway — a meeting point before the route descends into the historic heart of Al-Andalus. Optional: a day in Toledo and the Don Quijote route through La Mancha if arrival allows.

Córdoba

Two days in the Umayyad capital. The Great Mosque, the old quarters, the caliphal memory. This is where the journey begins to understand what Al-Andalus was — not ruins, but a living city that still carries its foundations. This is the first half of the guided group duet.

Granada

Two days in Granada close the Iberian core. The Alhambra at sunset, the Albaicín quarter from the mirador, the last Muslim kingdom of the peninsula. The guided duet reaches its emotional peak here — where Al-Andalus ended and the memory began.

Ronda

West over the mountain roads, a guided stop at Ronda — where Tariq and Musa passed through in 711–712. The old medina, the Arab baths, the bridge over the El Tajo gorge, then the road continues towards Seville.

Seville

A single night in Seville — the Guadalquivir city, the Giralda, the Alcázar. A brief pause before the crossing. Flamenco echoes in the Triana quarter, and the river flows toward the Atlantic and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Tangier

The ferry from Algeciras crosses the Strait to Tangier Med in about an hour to an hour and a half. Arrival in Tangier — the gateway to Morocco, the threshold of the Maghreb. The city of Paul Bowles and Ibn Battuta, where two continents face each other. A night here marks the passage from Iberia to North Africa.

Chefchaouen

Up into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen — the blue-washed medina founded by Andalusi refugees after the fall of Granada. A night among its indigo streets, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, and the mountain spring at Ras Elma.

Fes

Two days in Fes — the oldest continuously inhabited medina in the world. Qarawiyyin, the tanneries, the Andalusian quarter where refugees from Granada settled after 1492. This is where the journey's Al-Andalus thread reaches its Moroccan echo — the same memory, carried across the Strait.

Meknes

The imperial city of Moulay Ismail — grand gates, vast stables, the Versailles of Morocco. A stopover that introduces the scale of Moroccan imperial architecture before reaching the Atlantic capital.

Rabat

The capital — Hassan Tower, the Kasbah of the Oudayas, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. A quieter city than the others, where the Atlantic meets the Bouregreg river. A stop between Fes and Marrakech, but with its own weight.

Marrakech

Two final days beneath the Atlas. Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the souks, the Koutoubia minaret, the Majorelle Garden. The red city closes the route — the last imperial city, the gathering point, where the journey ends or continues into the mountains and the desert beyond.
